Jetboating in Wanaka New Zealand

By Glenn Bongartz

We went for a jet boat ride in Wanaka with Clutha River Jet. After booking the day before we arrived at the log cabin on the waterfront (its not really a log cabin, but looks a bit like one, it's a weather board cabin) We were greeted with smiles, given a life jacket and onto a 10am, 1 hour boat ride for $95.

The boats are smaller than the bigger industrial style of some Queenstown companies but we found this a bit friendlier and personal. The driver was James who lived in the area most of his life and had been a jet boat driver for 4 years. The ride across Lake Wanaka to the mouth of the Clutha River, could be a bit boring when you just want to get into the excitement of the spins and thrills, but James filled us in with some great information about the area and a few moves in the boat to keep us all awake. The trip across the lake did not feel like 15 minutes. What a great sight the mouth of the Clutha River is, great autumn colours and clear water you can fish spot in.

The Clutha is New Zealand's biggest river in terms of water flow, so you get to see where it all starts.

After passing a fisherman, who don't get along with jetboat operators (for obvious reasons) the action started. Darting between rocks and the trees on the banks was great fun then the occasional jet boat spin to throw some water over the boat was brilliant. The kids (and adults) on our boat could not wipe the smiles off their faces. James also knew the point when to 'button off' and let the passengers regain stomachs and composure.

After the fun we turned around went back up the Clutha across Lake Wanaka and home, but the trip ended with a couple of spins before we parked up.

In the log cabin we were shown photos that had been taken on the river by Garrick. We had the option of buying a bunch of great shots on disc for $25 (which we did).

We liked the personal feel of the Clutha River Jets operation and would recommend a trip while in Wanaka. Take your warm clothes, and a beanie on the head. It gets cold on the winter trips. You get a bit wet, but not to much to be uncomfortable.

A great balance of fun, scenery and great information.

If the Jetsons owned a yacht, it would probably look a lot like the Maltese Falcon. The prized possession of Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tom Perkins, the Maltese Falcon is like a sailing computer, equipped with fiber-optic networks, microprocessors and touch screens that have converted the brain and muscle of sailing into a computerized control panel. Now, the only manpower required to hoist and lower its 26,000 square feet of sails is a touch of a button. Likewise, the football-field-sized yacht completed in spring of 2006 is the most expensive and technologically advanced of its kind today. With a price tag hovering around $130 million, the Maltese Falcon navigates more like a video game than a 1,367-ton boat. But Perkins isn't stopping there. He's working on a sports submarine to house on the Maltese Falcon in case he ever wants to play with some whales or manatees deep in the ocean. Think of it as his version of a jet ski.

Inflatable boats will have a logo, decal or other branding on them most of the time. If not, they should all have an I.D. plate or patch identifying the boat brand, model, serial number, length, width, weight, capacities, manufacturer contact info and more. This plate is often located on the transom (back) of the boat. Contact the manufacturer using a Supplier's Index to attain information you may be looking for or may require in the future.

Some of the more advanced inflatable boats, like Zodiac's Fastroller, feature a special High-Pressure inflatable air floor. Made of two layers of fabric, connected by thousands of tiny "drop stitches", this floor can be inflated to a high pressure, creating a floor with rigidity equal to sheet of plywood a fraction of the weight. Best of all, they can be completely deflated and stowed in only minutes without removing any parts. This high pressure air floor is softer on knees and backsides too.

Jet Ski Kawasaki Short Overview

By Low Jeremy

The story of Jet Ski began when Clayton Jacobson II, the known inventor of the original personal water craft, sold the rights to his patent to Kawasaki.

The company began developing this personal water craft and in 1973, came the launch of their WSAA and WSAB models. These 2 are known to be the worlds first Jet Skis. They were produced on a limited basis, powered by 2-stroke twin-cylinder engines. The WSAA was distinguished by a flat haul while the WSAB had a V-type hull.

The year 1976 brought Kawasaki to mass-produce their Jet Ski. This year gave birth to the JS400 (JS400-A) model. When the racers and water sport enthusiasts demanded for power, Kawasaki responded and gave them the JS440 (JS440-A). This model was one of the longest-selling Jet Skis made.

In the 80s, Jet Ski was more powerful with additional features. This era brought the JS550. It was the first Jet Ski model to come out with revised high-capacity mixed-flow pump that gave it more power for people who wanted to have more than the usual thrill. The JS550 had 531 cm3 2-stroke Twin. Feature included the automatic rpm control.

The 80s also gave birth to the JS300 (1986) that was hailed to be the beginners Jet Ski, 650SX (1987) powered by a 635 cm3 2-stroke Twin, 300SX (1987) with 294 cm3 reed-valve Single with CD ignition, and the very first Kawasaki Jet Ski sit-down water craft, the two-seater Tandem Sport (1989) with 635 cm3 engine.

The 90s came with a riveting Jet Ski models, features and designs. At the beginning of the decade, the 550SX, considered to be a high-performing Jet Ski, made its sale. A year later, 550SX was given a facelift with aluminum cylinders, underwater exhaust outlet, and piston reed valves. The 1991 also gave rebirth to the 650SX but was more powerful than before.

Other 90s models are 2-seater 750SS, JL650-A, JH750-B sit-down, JH750-D sit-down, JT750-A sit-down, 750 ZXi, 750 Zsi, 3-seater JT750, 1100 Zxi, 900 STX, 1100 STX and a lot more. The 90s made Jet Ski a better choice for its wide range of choices. The power, material used, and features are upgraded with the coming of modern marine and water craft technology.

Some 90s models are carried with the turn of the century. And with the performance the current Kawasaki Jet Skis have, these models capture still capture the interest of both the thrill seeker and racers.

Tips On used hunter sailboats

, which use underwater wings or struts to lift the vessel clear of the water, standard jetboats use a conventional planing hull to ride across the water surface, with only the rear portion of the hull displacing any water. With the majority of the hull clear of the water, there is reduced drag, greatly enhancing speed and maneuverability, so jetboats are normally operated at planing speed. At slower speeds with less water pumping through the jet unit, the jetboat will lose some steering control and maneuverability and will quickly slow down as the hull comes off its planing state and hull resistance is increased. However, loss of steering control at low speeds can be negated by lowering the reverse deflector slightly and increasing throttle - so you increase thrust and thus control without increasing boat speed itself. A conventional river-going jet boat will have a shallow-angled (but not flat-bottomed) hull to improve its high speed cornering control and stability while also allowing it to traverse very shallow water. At speed, jetboats can be safely operated in less than 3 inches to (7.5 cm) of water.

Remember, these are maximum recommendations for fair weather operation. The number of people who can be carried safely depends on the type of pleasure craft, distribution of occupants, equipment carried and weather and water conditions. Operators must know and respect the limitations of their boat.
