Buying A New Or Used Boat: What Do You Really Wanted To Know

By Capablanca Fisher

When someone wanted to buy a boat, there is always the same question which pops in everyones head. Should they buy a new or a used boat?

If you wanted to buy a new boat. Here are some of the advantages of it. A new boat will come with a warranty. Therefore, it will save you the headache if something goes wrong with your boat and needed repairs.

Besides that, financing for a new boat will be much easier as you can usually get a better interest rate if you buy a new boat compared to a used boat.

However, a new boat will be much more expensive than a used boat and their value can quickly decreased within the first few years. A new boat also required furnishing such as boat accessories, electronics and all the other riggings which are usually found in a boat.

With a used boat, you can get it at a much cheaper price. So, this would be a good option if you are in a tight budget or just wanted a taste to see if boating suits you. You could also get some experience as a boat captain first in a used boat as you would not mind as much if you create some scratches on the boat as used boat usually comes with one or two.

Furthermore, a used boat also came with all the furnishing which the previous owners would have set up. This will reduce the need of spending much money for this purpose.

However, some used boats also come with slight mechanical fault or any other problems. Thus, hiring a boat surveyor is a must to ensure that the boat you are receiving have no defects in them.

Even though you might be thinking of skipping the part of hiring a boat surveyor, this is an unwise decision as it would be much cheaper to have marine survey than to have costly repairs afterward due to unseen problems during purchase of the boat.

Depending upon the results of the survey, you can stop the deal or use the results to get a lower price if there are problems that need to be attended to. Getting a marine survey is the smart decision if you are buying a used boat. It can save you money, time, and heartache, which will make the price of the survey well worth it.

As a conclusion, buying a new or used boat both has their pros and cons. Therefore it is up to you to decide which type of boat you wanted to buy after evaluating the options you have.

All vessels have keels, it is the backbone of the hull. In traditional construction it is the structure upon which all else depends. Modern monocoque designs include a virtual keel. Even multihulls have keels. On a sailboat the word Keel is also used to refer to the area that is added to the hull to improve its lateral plane. The lateral plane is what prevents leeway and allows sailing towards the wind. This can be an external piece or a part of the hull.

A jet ski is part water skiing device and part speedboat, with a definite hint of motorcycle during operation. Instead of the traditional propeller or screw motor, a jet ski uses an enclosed gas-powered motor to literally push water out in a jet stream. The jet ski operator straddles a central platform and assumes a shock-absorbing posture with knees slightly bent. The motor is electronically started with a toggle switch located in a column in front of the driver. All jet ski models should also have a dead man's switch -- a connection between the driver and ignition system which should kill the motor instantly if the driver falls off.

After purchasing your boat, the next sensible step would be to insure it against the usual hazards of owning a boat which include damage, sinking, collision, theft etc, along with third party insurance especially if your boat is to be moored in a marina or harbour. You will also find guidance and links on boat insurance within the Boat Insurance section. Remember that insurance on a boat is not a legal requirement, unlike car insurance, though it may be required if you have any form of marine finance.

Boat Fenders For A Sailing Yacht, cylindrical or spherical?

Thu, 20 Sep 2007 16:00:13 +0200
Is there a practical reason why some cruisers choose round over cylindrical (or vice versa) fenders for a sailing yacht? I have been told the guide for fender size is 2.5cm per 1.5m (1" per 5') of boat length for cylindrical, and 5cm per 1.5m (2" per 5') for round; is this an effective measure? Some sailors also seem to think that suspending fenders from the hand railings/wire between staunchions is poor seamanship...is there a modern reason why this may be true?
